We are thrilled to welcome the brilliant Polish conductor Barbara Dragan, whose dynamic podium presence and visionary interpretations have captivated audiences worldwide. Joining her to essay the challenges of Brahms is the Russian pianist Zlata Chochieva, praised for her brilliant technique and deep, poetic nuance. Together with the dedicated musicians of the KZNPO, they promise synergy and brilliance, performing one of the most demanding and rewarding concertos ever written, Brahms’s colossal Piano Concerto No. 2. Virtually a symphony in itself, it balances thunderous, athletic power with mellow moments of hushed intimacy and a chamber-like beauty.

Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony was composed in 1889 at Vysoká u Příbramě, Bohemia, on the occasion of his election to the Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and Arts. Dvořák conducted the premiere in Prague on 2 February 1890. In contrast to other symphonies of both the composer and the period, the music is cheerful and optimistic, in effect, a radiant celebration of life. Steeped in the rich folk melodies of the Bohemian countryside, it journeys from lyrical, pastoral serenity to a blazing, brass-fuelled finale that will leave you breathless.
